To get the WhatsApp Business API, you sign up through a provider using Meta's Embedded Signup flow. You log in with Facebook, pick or create a business portfolio and a WhatsApp Business Account, verify a phone number, choose a display name and add a payment method. It takes one sitting. Getting past the starting limits takes longer, because that depends on business verification.

Here is the whole path, including what to prepare and where people usually get stuck. All Meta details were checked against Meta's developer documentation on October 15, 2026.

## First: do you actually need the API?

The API (officially the WhatsApp Business Platform) is built for volume, approved templates and automation. It costs money per message. If you mainly want several people answering one number, a team inbox connected to the WhatsApp Business app by QR code may be enough. We compare both in [WhatsApp Business app vs API](https://haber.chat/blog/whatsapp-business-app-vs-api).

If you want both, coexistence keeps your number working in the app while it's also on the API. See [WhatsApp coexistence explained](https://haber.chat/blog/whatsapp-coexistence).

## What to prepare before you start

- **A Facebook or Meta business login.** Embedded Signup asks you to sign in with these credentials.
- **A business portfolio** (formerly Business Manager). You can use an existing one or create one during signup.
- **A phone number you own**, with a country and area code. It must be able to receive an SMS or a voice call for the verification code. Short codes don't work.
- **A display name** that clearly matches your business. It appears on your WhatsApp profile and, once approved, at the top of chats.
- **Business details and documents** for verification later: legal name, address, website and registration papers.
- **A payment method** for Meta's message fees, unless your provider pays Meta and bills you.

## Choose which number to use

This is the decision that causes the most trouble, so make it before you open the signup flow.

| Option | What happens | Good for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **A new number** | Register it straight to the API. Nothing to move. | A clean start |
| **Your current number, API only** | Meta won't register a number that's still on a WhatsApp account. You delete the WhatsApp account on the phone first, and your chat history in the app goes with it unless you back it up. | Teams leaving the app for good |
| **Your current number, with coexistence** | The number stays in the WhatsApp Business app and is also connected to the API. | Keeping your phone and adding automation |
| **Meta's free test number** | A +1 555 number Meta verifies for you. You can claim up to two. It can't be migrated or used outside the API. | Trying the platform before committing |

## Step by step: Embedded Signup

You start Embedded Signup from your provider's dashboard. In HaberChat, that's the option to connect a number through the official Cloud API or through coexistence. Then:

1. **Log in** with your Facebook or Meta business credentials.
2. **Accept Meta's terms** for the WhatsApp Business Platform.
3. **Grant access** so your provider's app can manage messaging on your WhatsApp assets.
4. **Select or create a business portfolio.**
5. **Select or create a WhatsApp Business Account** (WABA). This is the account that holds your numbers, templates and billing.
6. **Enter and verify your phone number** with the code Meta sends by SMS or call.
7. **Enter your display name.**

You own the portfolio, the WABA and the number, not your provider. You keep full access to them in WhatsApp Manager, so you can switch providers later.

## Add a payment method

Meta has no monthly fee for the API, but it charges per delivered message, by message type and the customer's country. Since October 1, 2026, replies inside the 24-hour customer service window are charged too. On most setups you add a card to your WhatsApp Business Account before you can send. Our guide to [WhatsApp API pricing](https://haber.chat/blog/whatsapp-api-pricing) explains the categories.

## Verify your business

You can send messages before verification, but within tight limits. Start verification in Meta Business Suite's Security Center, under Business verification. Meta asks for documents that tie your legal name, address, phone and website to the business, so make them match your portfolio exactly.

## What you can do on day one

A new business portfolio starts with a messaging limit of 250. That's the number of different customers you can message first, outside a customer service window, in a moving 24-hour period. Replies to customers who wrote to you don't count toward it. The limit is shared by every number in the portfolio.

Two ways lift it to 2,000:

- Get your business verified.
- Send 2,000 delivered messages to unique customers outside the service window within 30 days, using templates with a high quality rating.

Meta reviews your message quality first. After 2,000, the limit rises automatically to 10,000, 100,000 and then unlimited. Each step takes effect within 6 hours once your messages are high quality and you've used at least half your current limit over the last 7 days.

A new portfolio can also register only two phone numbers. That cap rises to 20 once you're verified or reach the 2,000 limit.

## Display name approval

Meta reviews your display name against its guidelines. If it's declined, edit it and resubmit. You can change a display name up to 10 times in 30 days. After approval, the number needs to be re-registered within 14 days for the new name to take effect. Your provider usually handles that.

## Templates: how you start conversations

On the API, any message you send outside the 24-hour window must use a pre-approved template. You submit templates in WhatsApp Manager or through your provider, and Meta classifies each one as marketing, utility or authentication. Write templates people expect to receive, because low-quality templates can be paused and they slow your limit increases.

## Common snags

- **"This number is registered to an existing WhatsApp account."** Delete the WhatsApp account from the app on that phone first, or use coexistence instead.
- **The code never arrives.** Check the number can receive international SMS or calls. If your number sits behind a phone menu, it needs to route the call to a person.
- **Too many registration attempts.** Meta allows 10 registration requests per number in 72 hours. Go over that and the number is blocked from registering for the next 72 hours.
- **Access not shared.** If your provider can't see the account, run the signup again and leave all the permission boxes ticked.

Once you're live, keep your sending clean. Our guide on [how to avoid getting your number banned](https://haber.chat/blog/avoid-whatsapp-ban) applies to the API too. For HaberChat's setup screens, see the [onboarding guide](https://app.haber.chat/help/waba-onboard) in our help center.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I apply for the WhatsApp Business API directly with Meta?

Most businesses get it through a provider using Meta's Embedded Signup. You still own the WhatsApp Business Account and number, and you can manage them in WhatsApp Manager.

### Can I use my existing WhatsApp number for the API?

Yes. Either delete the WhatsApp account on that phone and register the number to the API, or use coexistence to keep it in the WhatsApp Business app as well.

### Do I need business verification to start?

No. You can start without it, but you're limited to messaging 250 customers first per 24 hours and to two phone numbers. Verification is one way to raise both.

### Is the WhatsApp Business API free?

No. Meta charges per delivered message, including replies inside the 24-hour window since October 1, 2026, and your provider charges for its plan.
