# [respond.io Alternatives (2026) for WhatsApp-First Teams](https://haber.chat/blog/respond-io-alternatives)

 Written by [HaberChat Team](https://haber.chat/blog/author/haberchat-team) | Oct 25, 2026, 8:00:00 AM

respond.io is a strong omnichannel inbox, but it runs WhatsApp on the official API. That means Meta's per-message fees come on top of the plan, and since October 1, 2026 they include replies inside the 24-hour window. If most of your customer conversations happen on WhatsApp, you may be paying for channels you don't use and for every reply you send.

The short answer:

- **A team sharing a WhatsApp number, on a budget:** HaberChat, from $47.40 a month per number with 3 teammates included.
- **A sales team that works in its CRM:** TimelinesAI, from $25 per user a month.
- **Lots of WhatsApp groups:** Periskope, from $25 per user a month.
- **Staying on the API with a WhatsApp-only tool:** Wati, with Meta's fees on top.

*Disclosure: we make HaberChat, so weigh our pick accordingly. Prices come from each vendor's public pricing page, checked on October 1, 2026, and are linked so you can confirm them.*

## What you pay for on respond.io

According to [respond.io's pricing page](https://respond.io/pricing) (checked October 1, 2026):

- **Starter:** $79 a month with 5 users and unlimited monthly active contacts. No broadcasts, workflows or AI agents.
- **Growth:** $159 a month with 10 users. Adds broadcasts, workflows and AI agents. Includes 1,000 monthly active contacts, then $12 per extra 100.
- **Advanced:** $279 a month with 10 users and 1,000 monthly active contacts, then $15 per extra 100.
- **Meta's WhatsApp fees** are not included in any plan. respond.io [says it doesn't mark them up](https://respond.io/faqs/how-much-does-whatsapp-business-api-cost-and-are-there-any-hidden-charges), so you pay Meta's rates as they are.

Annual billing takes 20% off. For a business that uses Instagram, Messenger, TikTok, email and WhatsApp side by side, that's a fair deal. For a WhatsApp-first team, three costs stack up: the plan, contact overages on Growth and above, and a Meta charge on every message.

## Why WhatsApp-first teams look elsewhere

Three reasons come up most often:

- **Every reply now has a price.** From October 1, 2026, [Meta charges for free-form replies](https://developers.facebook.com/documentation/business-messaging/whatsapp/pricing/non-template-messages) sent through the API, per message, at each market's utility rate. Only replies within 72 hours of a Click-to-WhatsApp ad stay free of delivery charges.
- **The automation you want sits on Growth.** Broadcasts and workflows start at $159 a month, and that plan counts monthly active contacts.
- **Some WhatsApp features don't work on the API.** respond.io supports coexistence, so you can keep using the WhatsApp Business app on the same number. But groups, broadcast lists and calls stay on the app side and don't reach the respond.io inbox.

## QR code or API: the choice behind every alternative

A QR connection links your existing WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business number to a team inbox the same way WhatsApp Web links a computer. There's no Meta approval, no templates and no per-message fee. The trade-off is that it isn't an official Meta integration: sending speed is limited, and WhatsApp's anti-spam rules apply. It suits conversations with customers and leads who expect to hear from you, not cold bulk sends.

The API suits high volume, approved marketing templates and interactive messages, and Meta bills you per message. We cover the trade-offs in detail in [WhatsApp Business app vs API](https://haber.chat/blog/whatsapp-business-app-vs-api).

## 1. HaberChat: best for teams sharing a number

HaberChat is a WhatsApp team inbox. You connect a number, invite your team, and assign chats, leave private notes and reply together. Plans are priced per number with teammates included.

- **Connects by:** QR code, the official Cloud API, or [coexistence](https://app.haber.chat/help/coexistence).
- **Price:** Professional $47.40 a month (3 teammates), Business $82.90 (6) and Enterprise $120.40 (9, then $18 per extra user), checked October 1, 2026. Each plan covers one number. The free trial runs 7 days with no credit card.
- **Stands out for:** campaigns, scheduled messages, quick replies, API and webhooks on every plan. The AI assistant, analytics and automatic assignment start on Business.
- **Trade-offs:** WhatsApp only, so no Instagram or email in the same inbox, and no native CRM sync (you connect a CRM through Zapier, Make or the API).

## 2. TimelinesAI: best for CRM-driven sales teams

- **Connects by:** QR code, the official API or coexistence.
- **Price:** $25, $40 or $60 per user a month; annual billing saves up to 20%. [See pricing](https://timelines.ai/pricing/).
- **Stands out for:** native CRM integrations, a workflow builder and a public API on every plan.
- **Trade-offs:** every user is a paid seat, and the cheapest plan keeps 30 days of chat history and gives the shared inbox to the owner only.

More detail in our guide to [TimelinesAI alternatives](https://haber.chat/blog/timelinesai-alternatives).

## 3. Periskope: best for WhatsApp groups

- **Connects by:** QR code (Link a device in WhatsApp), with regular or business numbers.
- **Price:** Starter $25 and Pro $35 per user a month. The first phone is free, then $25 a month per extra phone. [See pricing](https://periskope.app/pricing).
- **Stands out for:** managing many groups, ticketing and AI flagging, with HubSpot, Freshdesk and Zoho Desk integrations.
- **Trade-offs:** per-user pricing and no official API option.

## 4. Wati: if you want to stay on the API

If you need approved templates and high-volume sending but only care about WhatsApp, Wati is a WhatsApp-focused API tool. Growth includes 3 users with no option to add more; Pro and Business include 5, with extra users at $24 and $69 a month. Plan prices vary by region, and Meta's per-message fees come on top, as with respond.io. [See pricing](https://www.wati.io/pricing/). We compare it in [Wati alternatives](https://haber.chat/blog/wati-alternatives).

## What a 5-person team pays each month

Monthly list prices for five people working from one number, checked October 1, 2026:

| Tool | Plan | Plan price | Meta message fees |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| **HaberChat** | Business (up to 6 teammates) | **$82.90** | None on a QR connection |
| Periskope | Starter | $125 (5 × $25) | None (QR only) |
| TimelinesAI | Shared Inbox | $200 (5 × $40) | None on a QR connection |
| respond.io | Starter (no broadcasts or workflows) | $79 | Yes, per message |
| respond.io | Growth (with broadcasts and workflows) | $159, plus contacts over 1,000 | Yes, per message |

If your team really does use Instagram, Messenger and email as much as WhatsApp, respond.io's Starter plan is good value. The alternatives above make more sense when nearly all your conversations are on WhatsApp.

## Switching without losing your number

Your number stays yours. You can move it to another API provider, or take it off the API and go back to the WhatsApp Business app, then connect the app to a QR-based inbox. If you used coexistence, the number is still active in the app, which makes the move simpler. Chat history stored in respond.io doesn't move with the number, so export what you need first. ## Frequently asked questions

### Does respond.io charge for WhatsApp messages?

respond.io's plans don't include Meta's WhatsApp fees, so you pay Meta per message on top of the plan. Since October 1, 2026, that includes replies inside the 24-hour window.

### Is there a respond.io alternative without per-message fees?

Yes. Tools that connect your number by QR code, such as HaberChat, TimelinesAI and Periskope, don't incur Meta message fees. The trade-offs are an unofficial connection and lower sending limits.

### Can I keep my WhatsApp number if I leave respond.io?

Yes. Move it to another API provider, or take it off the API and use it in the WhatsApp Business app with a QR-based inbox. Export any chat history you need before switching.

### What's the cheapest respond.io alternative for a WhatsApp team?

For a team sharing one number, HaberChat's Professional plan is $47.40 a month with three teammates, with no Meta message fees on a QR connection (list prices, checked October 1, 2026).
