# [WhatsApp Web Keeps Disconnecting? Causes and Fixes](https://haber.chat/blog/whatsapp-web-keeps-disconnecting)

WhatsApp Web usually disconnects for one of five reasons: your computer's internet or network, an outdated browser, a phone that hasn't used WhatsApp in more than 14 days, someone removing the session from Linked devices, or a logout on the phone. Each has a quick fix, and most take under a minute.

Your phone doesn't need to be online for WhatsApp Web to work. Since WhatsApp moved to linked devices, a computer keeps working on its own, as long as the phone uses WhatsApp at least once every 14 days.

## Quick diagnosis

| What you see | Likely cause | Fix |
| --- | --- | --- |
| A yellow "Computer not connected" bar | Your computer is offline | Check the computer's internet, then refresh the page |
| Messages stuck sending, but the internet works | A stuck session or a blocking network | Refresh; log out and back in; try another network |
| Back to the QR code screen | The session was logged out | Scan the QR code again from the phone |
| All computers logged out at once | The phone hasn't used WhatsApp in 14+ days, or WhatsApp was logged out on it | Open WhatsApp on the phone, then link the devices again |
| One computer logged out, others fine | That session was removed under Linked devices | Link it again, and agree who manages the device list |

## 1. Check the computer's connection

WhatsApp's help center says a yellow bar reading "Computer not connected" means the computer itself is offline. Check Wi-Fi or the cable first. If the internet works and messages still won't send or arrive, refresh the browser tab. On WhatsApp Desktop, quit the app and open it again.

## 2. Check the network isn't blocking WhatsApp

Office, school and public Wi-Fi often block or interrupt WhatsApp Web. WhatsApp asks network administrators to allow traffic to web.whatsapp.com, \*.web.whatsapp.com and \*.whatsapp.net. A quick test: connect the computer to your phone's hotspot. If WhatsApp Web stays connected there, the network is the problem.

VPNs and strict firewalls can cause the same drops. Turn the VPN off for a few minutes to rule it out.

## 3. Use a supported, up-to-date browser

WhatsApp Web supports current versions of Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, Opera and Safari. Older or less common browsers can connect and then drop. Update the browser, and try disabling extensions that block scripts or change pages, since they can break the session.

## 4. Open WhatsApp on your phone at least every 14 days

This one catches out a lot of businesses. According to [WhatsApp's linked devices FAQ](https://faq.whatsapp.com/378279804439436), linked devices work while the phone is offline, but they're logged out if the phone isn't used for more than 14 days. If the phone with your business number sits in a drawer while the team works on computers, every session drops on day 15.

The fix is simple: open WhatsApp on that phone and send a message at least once a week. Put it in someone's calendar.

## 5. Don't remove the wrong linked device

An account can link up to four devices. When a fifth person wants in, someone often removes a session from the phone's Linked devices list to make room, and removes the one a colleague, or a connected tool, was using. To find out, open WhatsApp on the phone, go to Linked devices and check what's listed and when each was last active.

If you keep running out of slots, that's a sign the team needs a shared inbox rather than more devices. We explain the options in [how to share one WhatsApp Business number with your team](https://haber.chat/blog/share-whatsapp-business-number-with-team).

## 6. Check for a logout on the phone

Logging out of WhatsApp on the phone disconnects every linked device, including WhatsApp Web. If someone logged out, or set WhatsApp up again on a different phone, link each computer again from the phone that now holds the number. Use only the official WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app: WhatsApp treats modified apps as a Terms of Service violation and can restrict the account.

## 7. If it still drops: restart and relink

1. On the computer, log out of WhatsApp Web.
2. On the phone, close WhatsApp, restart the phone and make sure WhatsApp is up to date.
3. Go to Linked devices and remove the old session.
4. Link the computer again by scanning the QR code.

## When a team inbox disconnects

A team inbox connected by QR code, such as HaberChat, uses one of those same linked-device slots, so the same rules apply. The most common causes are these three:

- **The 14-day rule.** Keep the phone active even if nobody replies from it.
- **The session was removed** from Linked devices by someone making room for another computer. With a team inbox, teammates log in to the inbox, not to WhatsApp, so they don't need their own slots.
- **Very large accounts.** More than about 1,000 open chats or 100 groups can make a session slow or unstable. Archiving old chats, or turning on automatic clean-up, helps.

In HaberChat, the number's page shows its session status, and Reconnect under Actions starts a fresh session. If you'd rather hear about a drop before customers do, the "number:session" webhook reports when a session goes online, offline or needs a new QR scan, and you can send that alert to email or chat with n8n or Make. A QR connection isn't an official Meta integration. If you need a connection that doesn't depend on a phone at all, the official API is the alternative; our [app vs API comparison](https://haber.chat/blog/whatsapp-business-app-vs-api) covers the trade-offs, and [coexistence](https://haber.chat/blog/whatsapp-coexistence) lets you keep the app as well.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does my phone need to be online for WhatsApp Web to work?

No. Linked devices work while the phone is offline. But if the phone doesn't use WhatsApp for more than 14 days, all linked devices are logged out.

### Why does WhatsApp Web keep logging me out?

Usually because the session was removed under Linked devices, WhatsApp was logged out on the phone, or the phone hasn't used WhatsApp in more than 14 days. Link the device again, and keep the phone active.

### Why does WhatsApp Web disconnect on office Wi-Fi?

Many managed networks block or interrupt WhatsApp Web. Ask IT to allow web.whatsapp.com, \*.web.whatsapp.com and \*.whatsapp.net, or test on a phone hotspot to confirm.

### How many computers can use WhatsApp Web at once?

Up to four linked devices per account. A team inbox connected by QR code uses one slot, and every teammate logs in through the inbox.
