How to Connect WhatsApp to Claude or ChatGPT (MCP)
You can connect WhatsApp to Claude or ChatGPT through an MCP server. Once it's connected, you can ask the assistant to summarize unread chats, find a conversation, draft a reply or send a message, all from the AI chat window. With HaberChat, you add one server URL and an API key to Claude or ChatGPT, and the assistant can work with your connected WhatsApp number.
What MCP is, in one paragraph
The Model Context Protocol is an open standard for connecting AI applications to outside systems. An MCP server exposes a set of actions, such as "search chats" or "send a message", and any AI app that speaks MCP can use them. Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and other tools all support it, so one server works with all of them.
What you can do with WhatsApp in Claude or ChatGPT
HaberChat's MCP server gives the assistant access to most of what you can do in the inbox. Typical requests:
- "Summarize the unread chats from today and list anything urgent."
- "Find my last conversation with Dana and tell me what we agreed on price."
- "Draft a polite reply to the customer asking about delivery times, and show it to me before sending."
- "Which chats have been waiting longest for a reply?"
- "Add the label 'quote sent' to the chats where we sent a price this week."
Behind those requests, the server covers sending text and media messages, scheduling messages, searching and reading chats, chat statistics, contacts and labels, groups and channels, campaigns, and device status. See the full list in our help center.
The assistant only acts when you ask it to. It isn't an always-on chatbot that answers customers by itself. Automatic replies are a separate HaberChat feature that you set up in the inbox.
Before you start
- A HaberChat account with a connected WhatsApp number. API access is included on every plan, so no extra subscription is needed.
- An API key. Create one in HaberChat under Settings, API Keys. Use a separate key for each AI app so you can revoke one without affecting the others.
- An AI app that supports custom MCP servers. Details for Claude and ChatGPT are below.
The server address is https://api.haber.chat/mcp. HaberChat currently labels the MCP server as beta, so treat it as a productivity tool rather than the backbone of a production system.
Connect WhatsApp to Claude
Claude calls these custom connectors. According to Anthropic's help center (checked October 1, 2026), they're available on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. Free accounts can add one custom connector, and on Team and Enterprise, an owner adds the connector for the organization.
- In Claude, open Settings, then Customize, then Connectors.
- Choose Add custom connector and give it a name, such as WhatsApp.
- Paste the server URL with your key added as a parameter, in the format shown in our Claude setup guide.
- Save, then turn the connector on in a chat from the + menu.
- Ask something simple first, such as "How many unread WhatsApp chats do I have?"
In Claude Desktop you can instead add the server to the app's configuration file and send the key as a header, which keeps it out of the URL. The help center has the exact configuration.
Connect WhatsApp to ChatGPT
ChatGPT adds MCP servers as apps through developer mode. Which plans can use it, and whether write actions such as sending messages are allowed, depends on your ChatGPT plan, and in business workspaces an admin has to enable developer mode first. Check OpenAI's help center for the current rules on your plan.
- Turn on developer mode (or ask your workspace admin to allow it).
- Go to Apps and create a new app.
- Paste the HaberChat server URL with your key, as shown in our MCP guide.
- Choose no additional authentication, since the key is in the URL, then scan the tools and create the app.
Keep it safe
- Protect the key. A key in a URL can end up in logs and browser history. Use header authentication where your app supports it, keep a separate key for web clients, and delete keys you no longer use. Deleting a key revokes access immediately.
- Review before sending. Ask the assistant to show you drafts first, at least until you trust how it writes to customers.
- Don't use it for cold bulk messaging. An AI that can send messages makes it easy to message many people at once. WhatsApp's anti-spam rules still apply, and a QR-connected number can be restricted for it. Read what to do if WhatsApp limits your number.
- Think about who has access. Anyone using the AI app with the connector turned on can act on your WhatsApp number. For a team, give each person their own inbox login instead; see how to share one WhatsApp Business number with your team.
MCP, API or no-code tools?
| Option | Best for | Runs |
|---|---|---|
| MCP in Claude or ChatGPT | Ad hoc questions, summaries and replies on request | When you ask |
| Zapier, Make or n8n | Repeatable workflows, such as a form submission sending a WhatsApp message | Automatically, on a trigger |
| API and webhooks | Custom integrations built by a developer | Automatically, in your own code |
Many teams use MCP for day-to-day questions and a no-code tool for the automations that should run without anyone asking. More ideas in using WhatsApp with AI, no code needed.
Frequently asked questions
What is a WhatsApp MCP server?
It's a server that exposes WhatsApp actions, such as reading chats and sending messages, through the Model Context Protocol, so AI apps like Claude and ChatGPT can use them on your request.
Can Claude send WhatsApp messages?
Yes. Once you add HaberChat's MCP server as a custom connector, Claude can send messages from your connected number when you ask. Ask it to show drafts first if you want to review them.
Does it work with ChatGPT?
Yes, through developer mode. Which plans can use it, and whether sending is allowed, depends on your ChatGPT plan, and business workspaces need an admin to enable it.
Does the AI reply to customers automatically?
No. Through MCP, the assistant acts only when you ask it to. Automatic replies are a separate HaberChat feature that you set up in the inbox.
